So I'm thinking of making an appearance at the Texas Ranger game tomorrow night in Arlington before they head out on a long road trip. Two things must be taken into account when you attend a Ranger game, especially this time of the year. The Heat and the Wave. I can handle the low 90's that are forecast for the game. I don't know how much more of the Wave I can sit through.
For many years and many games I have sat while the Wave was slowly rotating around the Old Arlington Stadium and in the current Ballpark as well. I stayed in my seat and wondered just what in the name of Ty Cobb would cause people to do this? Is it to get in some exercise? Are you that bored with the game? I have never been to a major league game that bored me some much I wanted to join others in what amounts to synchronized dancing. I will admit that baseball moves at a slow pace at times which is actually part of the beauty of the sport because it has no clock. But I always find something to keep my attention during the slow periods. The Wave is never under consideration.
I did some research, briefly, to find out who started the Wave? Best I can tell the Wave started in the early 80's at either a NHL playoff game or a Yankee game. I thought I had been held hostage longer than that but I won't dispute the begging. But I will strongly push for an end. Please, no more wave! It's stupid and is just so "un-baseball." I mean, could you imagine doing the Wave as Babe Ruth was calling his shot or Willis Mays caught that ball with his back turned to infield? Noooo! Those fans were watching the game!
I'm not alone in my hatred for the Wave. There are websites that are promoting an end to the silliness and I was so happy to see that one site wants to see it nixed at Rangers Ballpark. They are my new heroes. The website gets right to the point with it's name, Stop The Wave. This site features Patriots like me who want to see and end to the arm waving madness. You can even get a Stop The Wave T-Shirt. I was almost moved to tears when I saw that.
